Pandu Roga — the condition that reads like a modern lab report
Ayurvedic classical texts — Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Hridaya — describe a condition called Pandu Roga: pallor, fatigue, weakness, and a loss of natural skin luster, arising from a depletion of Rakta dhatu, the blood tissue. How blood is actually built — and where it stalls
In Ayurvedic physiology, blood isn’t built directly from what you eat. Food is first transformed into Rasa (a nutrient plasma), which then travels to the liver and spleen. There, a specific function called Ranjaka Pitta — literally, “the coloring Pitta,” seated in the liver, spleen, and stomach — acts on that Rasa and transforms it into Rakta, imparting its red color through a process texts call Raktagni. And crucially, Ranjaka Pitta’s work depends on what comes before it: if Agni (digestive fire) is weak — a state called Agnimandya — the food you eat never properly transforms into usable Rasa in the first place. Undigested residue, called Ama, accumulates instead, and the entire downstream chain stalls before it ever reaches the liver to become blood.
